Samichlaus and Schmützli (December)

Samichlaus: The Swiss version of Santa Claus is based on Saint Nicholas, whose feast day was celebrated on Saturday – his Swiss German name, Samichlaus, alludes to that. Another difference is that peanuts are essentially all you are going to get from Swiss Santa. He does not climb down a chimney to leave presents under the tree on Christmas Morning.

Schmützli: In the German part of the Switzerland, Samichlaus's foil usually carries a broom of twigs for administering punishment to children who have been naughty. Traditionally, little kids  were put into Schmützli's bag while he pretended to run off with them (he would usually run around the outside of the house a couple times)!  Thankfully that practice has fallen to the wayside in the past couple decades.
